Project Background

First built in 1909 and expanded in 1917, Adams Elementary is the oldest school in Spokane. Enrollment growth in the area required the addition of several portable buildings in the 1970s, and the main school building has issues with efficiency, accessibility, functionality, and security.

The current building also does not fulfill Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design, lacking an elevator and appropriate ramp access. At this time, students living in the Adams boundaries needing these accommodations must transfer to a different elementary school.

The new building will be efficient, accessible, and incorporate space for Boys & Girls Club of Spokane County programming for the south Spokane community.

Project Status

The design of the new Adams was funded through the 2015 SPS bond and completed by NAC Architecture of Spokane.

Construction of the new building, funded through the 2025 SPS bond, will be completed by Garco Construction of Spokane.

A Community Open House was held in early December 2025 for public viewing of the school before current students relocated to "Camp Adams" at the old Jefferson Elementary School in January 2026.

Demolition began in February 2026. Construction of the new building is slated to start in spring of 2026.

The project is expected to be completed in summer of 2027, so it is ready ready for students and staff to move in for the start of the 2027-28 school year.
